Proposed Columbia Expansion To Cause Controversy

Columbia University's effort to expand its campus is causing controversy in the surrounding of Harlem community.

The university hopes to use the 18-acre area between 125th and 133rd Streets from Broadway and 12th Avenue for new academic facilities.

Speaking on Thursday's "Inside City Hall," Reverend Calvin Butts says the university has not reached out to him or the Harlem community about the expansion.

"Columbia is moving in a way that is really alienating a lot of the community members who have been really interested in working with them to develop a good plan, particularly where affordable housing is concerned,” said Butts.

The university has said the project will create thousands of jobs, and has made promises to work with the community to make sure no one is displaced.
