Ouch, Harlem's Growing pain!

Columbia University's plan to build a $7 billion campus expansion in West Harlem was approved by city planners yesterday during a intense meeting packed with neighborhood opponents who accused the panel of selling out. The 12-member Planning Commission approved the project with one abstention and one vote against it, sending the zoning changes for 17 acres of mostly manufacturing and commercial land north of 125th Street to the City Council for final approval...

Rancher, Mr. Bottom funds Harlem school to the top

There was ballroom dancing, violin music and a rousing rendition of 'The Yellow Rose of Texas'. It wasn't just any day at Mount Carmel Holy Rosary School, the school honored Elliot Bottom, one of the schools many friends who have helped bring the parochial school back from closure. Today enrollment is up and school officials say the new music and dance space / storage room brings a new chance to focus on arts as part of the education experience. Bottom says 'he was hooked' on helping the school after visiting during a business trip. He says the dedication of staff and students made up his mind. The schools other friends includes the legendary eatery Rao's located nearby.

Doe Fund Chefs Prepare Meals in harlem

You've probably seen the men of the Doe Fund around town, in their blue uniforms cleaning up with their blue buckets. It's part of the Ready, Willing and Able job training program for newly released prisoners. "I kind of stumbled, and I'm trying to pick myself back up, like everyone else is here," said participant Charlie Lebron. I'm just grateful to be alive – to have a breath of life and just being able to help people," said participant Michael Jones. On Thursday, the program's aspiring chefs prepared a meal for Harlem residents. On hand to help carve the turkey was Mayor Michael Bloomberg. "There's the old story about you give somebody a fish, they eat once; you give them a fishing pole and skills, they can feed their families for their rest of their lives. This is giving them those skills,” said the mayor. "Everybody gave up on us, but the mayor never gave up on us – that's a good thing," said participant Robert Johnson. I additon to cooking, these men learn other job skills. Most of them are also working to get clean and sober from drugs and alcohol. "The gratitude I had was remembering where I came from,” said participant Joseph Edmondson. “Usually my response to that was to keep that phone, sell that phone to get more drugs.” For these men, gratitude isn't just a slogan for Thanksgiving, but something they say they bring into their lives everyday to lead healthy, productive lives.

EXCLUSIVE: FBI Tells Sharpton Safety "At Risk"

The FBI has informed the Reverend Al Sharpton that his life may be in danger. Sharpton's lawyer Sanford Rubenstein says he was informed by the FBI this morning that "there is a possibility that a dangerous substance may have been mailed to Reverend Al Sharpton at his New York headquarters. For his safety, we have been advised that he or his staff should not open any packages or letters from a specific addressee or any mail that looks suspicious because it is possible that it could contain dangerous materials." Rubenstein says for Sharpton's safety and for the safety of anyone who might open packages addressed to the National Action Network or him, they have been informed that they should not open suspicious packages and instead will turn them over to the FBI.
